Leafy and the Wilting Grove

Something was off.

Leafy felt it before she even saw it—like the forest was holding its breath. The usual rustling of leaves? Gone. The soft hum of magic in the air? Silent.

She crouched near a patch of ferns, running her fingers over them. Brittle. Too dry. Since when did ferns feel like that?

A dim flicker of light hovered beside her—Astra, her tiny sprite companion. Normally, Astra glowed, bright and strong. But today? Dim.

Leafy frowned. "Are you okay?"

Astra twirled, but her usual shimmering stardust barely trailed behind. "Not tired. Just… fading."

That made Leafy’s stomach twist.

A twig snapped behind her. She spun around, nearly tripping—only to find Lyria stepping into the clearing, her antlers catching the last rays of sunlight.

Lyria didn’t speak. Didn’t smile. Just knelt and pressed her hand to the soil. Listened.

Silence stretched.

Too long.

"Lyria?" Leafy’s voice wavered.

Lyria’s violet eyes darkened. "The magic is fading."

Leafy’s heart thumped. Oh. Oh, that was bad.

"So what do we do?"

Lyria hesitated. "We ask Alderwise."

Alderwise wasn’t just a tree. He was The Tree. The one who had seen everything, rooted deeper than time itself.

The air thickened as his voice rumbled through the grove.

"Little ones."

Leafy shivered.

"The land is weary."

Lyria swallowed. "Why?"

Alderwise’s leaves trembled. "Nature does not wither from time. It withers when it is forgotten."

Forgotten?

Leafy’s stomach twisted. "But… we’re here. We take care of it."

A long pause.

"Not enough."

Lyria was quiet. Then, softly, "He’s right."

Leafy blinked. "Right about what?"

Lyria ran a hand over a nearby trunk. "We only tend to the forest when something’s wrong. But when was the last time we just… cared for it? Not to fix it, but to love it?"

Oh.

Oh.

They started small.

Lyria hummed, a soft, steady melody. Leafy pressed her hands to the earth, just being there. Astra, flickering but stronger now, sent trails of light through the trees.

And slowly, the forest sighed.

Leaves lifted. Roots stretched. A wilted fern unfurled toward the sun.

Leafy pressed a palm to Alderwise’s bark. "We won’t forget again."

Because nature isn’t something you fix when it’s broken.

It’s something you love—every single day.
